This is a lesson that can be used as a stand alone lesson or built into a unit on Dystopian Fiction that covers the skills required to access the (9-1) strengthened GCSE Non Fiction Reading Paper. The lesson works slowly through each question type offering tips and guidance on how to access secure grades at GCSE level. Two non fiction articles are included.

With a distinct shortage of past papers for the new GCSE 9-1 specifications I have created this additional practice paper for use with the OCR spec. Texts used are Hilary Mantels 'Bring up the Bodies and Michael Frayns 'Spies'.

This is a complete scheme of work including a range of engaging tasks to captivate a KS3 group or lower ability KS4 group on Shakespeare’s less frequently taught Much Ado About Nothing.

This lesson takes you through a theory based lesson using music to learn quotations from texts. This lesson has proved to be a highly enjoyable, alternative and effective approach to last minute quotation learning, even for students who struggle to retain information. An in depth study of Act 2 of Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’. This is designed for GCSE teaching and includes a range of activities including: explanation and exploration of iambic pentameter, links to the theme of distrust, drama activities, quotation finds, matching activities, debate and written tasks. This is 4-6 hours of teaching and includes everything students need to know for their exams in an accessible and fun format.

This resource offers a thorough exploration of this IGCSE poem by Peter Reading. The activities are highly varied and inclusive, whilst also offering plenty of challenge for the more able students. This lesson includes literacy tasks, arty tasks, independent and group tasks plus a clear guide as to how to achieve the range of grades prior to closing with an exemplar assessment task. This lesson, whilst prepared with the Cambridge International specifications (English Literature and World Literature 2022 onwards) in mind, would make a perfectly engaging lesson for KS3 students just setting out on their GCSE style poetry as it includes clear terminology, explained and applied and exemplar sentence starters as a guide as to how to ‘start an analytical response’. This lesson includes a number of engaging activities to draw students into this subtly complex poem. I have designed this lesson primarily for use when teaching the Cambridge IGCSE specifications (0475 and (0992) (2020-2021 syllabuses) although this would equally make an excellent study of an Unseen Poem at GCSE or the study of Other Cultures Poetry for a KS3 curriculum. One of the activities in this resource requires ‘sweets’: some sweet and some sour…these are not included in this resource, but make for an exciting and memorable lesson that helps students see the ‘effect’ of the poets methods in a highly kinaesthetic way. This resource has been an absolute labour of love. Having created chapter resources on this text, I set myself a challenge to create a revision or learning resource that covered aspects on context, quotations, links within the text, linguistic devices and narration whilst students are actively engaged. The tasks in this resource start with some straightforward questions and build towards quotation reconstruction before finishing on an analytical question. To ensure you have a clear winner in your groups I have included a Bonus Question for use in a tie break situation. This bespoke resource on Blake’s The Tyger is designed for use with the Edexcel IGCSE curriculum but is equally useful in teaching Unseen Poetry skills required across all of the IGCSE and GCSE English specifications. These resources are designed for a low/middle ability group and as such are highly supported and differentiated. Challenge/extension tasks are included here and every step of the process is checked for understanding, reinforced and modelled to ensure all students make maximum progress. Tasks include individual work, paired work, whole group work and peer ‘teaching’ (at a low level, but is designed to encourage students to become independent learners). My students enjoyed the variety of tasks included here and I could really see progress in terms of being prepared to ‘try’ out plausible answers based on this poem. This complete lesson is aimed at IGCSE students, but is equally suitable for use as an Unseen Poem, and encourages students to become increasingly independent in their learning. Small group tasks are set to encourage all abilities to be able to access this poem and the requirement to present their findings and set a fun task for their peers ensures that the focus is on enjoyment and ‘game play’ as much as learning. For less able groups questions are proffered to open discussion and then annotated stanzas are included either for use at face value or to top up the presentations. This lesson closes with some thought provoking questions that only make sense once the text has been studied. This is an engaging and active learning lesson that my students have always enjoyed for both its sense of freedom to find answers and support in finding out if they were in the right ball park.

This Literacy Programme is 1 of 3 for use with year 8s across an entire term and forms part of a newly written programme that builds on the strengthened demands of the KS2 literacy skills and the Year 7 Programme also available on TES. This resource includes a PDF version of the programme plus an Adobe version that is editable so that the name of your school/behaviour policy can be incorporated into the documents. The powerpoint presentation is used to test the weekly skills gained by your students and allows you to track progress and build in additional intervention for areas of shortfall post completion. The subsequent booklets for use in this Programme and year 9 will be posted imminently.

Based on an extract from Joseph Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness' here is a further exam style paper to use for revision as you prepare students for the GCSE reading paper exams. Written using the Edexcel (9-1) English Language Specification.

These resources include a detailed lesson plan, powerpoint, individualised learning objectives that are aligned with the new GCSE 9-1 grades, a game board template together with a set of original and fully differentiated questions (I laminated both the board and the questions to aid longevity as the students loved this game and wanted to play it again and again). This lesson was ranked outstanding on every level when observed as the outcomes demonstrated above average progression for every student in the group. These resources are perfect for use with years 9,10 and 11.

An observation standard lesson including lesson plan and all resources to aid the evidence of progression during the lesson. Includes effective use of music (embedded) to aid engagement with the 'tone' contained in this poem. Focusing on 'colour' as a route to thinking about tone is a strategy that transfers easily to studying other poems as Seen or Unseen.
